If you’re proud of your confederate statues, then you’re most likely an asshole, so I’m not worried about your feelings. The statues are a part of history, and personally I don’t care if they stay up or come down, but again, both sides are a little ridiculous. I can understand how an African American could look at them and feel the hate, and ask for them to come down. Of course I can understand that because I understand history. I understand the plight of those men and what they stood for, and it was gross. They fought for disgusting beliefs and were idolized in statues, after they got their ass handed to them in a hardee hat. Which makes the whole idolization even more ridiculous to me. Especially when it is someone born and raised in the north who acts like they have any affiliation with the south, and then for whatever reason support the confederacy. Then they preach about the “actual” reason for the civil war and all of the fake history that has been fabricated to cover up confederate atrocities, so that “the south” can hang on to their “heritage.” Your real southern pride should reflect on the true values of the good people who have accomplished wonderful things, but also didn’t enslave, rape, and murder based on the amount of melanin in a person’s skin. That being said, if you choose to idolize those statues and are angry or offended that others want them down, I get it. Just understand that you’re angry because this figure of hatred in our country might be removed, because there are people who genuinely feel sadness when they see it and don’t believe that it’s right, so at the end of the day, why do you care? If there is one person that gets sad when they see that or genuinely think it’s wrong, then what is so important about that “history,” that you have to fight so hard for it? I can understand if they want to blow up Mount Rushmore. There were slave owners on there too, but they lived in a different time (no excuse) Thomas Jefferson fought against slavery, although he owned a bunch, but Teddy Roosevelt and old honest Abe Lincoln didn’t own slaves obviously. That also wasn’t the only history those men were known for. They did a lot of amazing things for this country, along with some terrible things in their personal and political lives, and nobody is defending that. I don’t get it either way, but if I had to pick a side, I would pick the side of the people who feel sick when they see those figures being idolized for being awful. The bullshit “state’s rights” argument is a deflection from the actual argument. We all know that was part of the history, but to pretend like slavery wasn’t the cornerstone is ridiculous. To me and many others, those statues, along with the confederate flag, are nothing but signs of hate and a terrible time in history. I actually like seeing that flag flying because it shows me who to avoid when looking for intelligent conversation. So fly your flags and salute your statues, Asshole. The rest of us will be trying to move forward and improve on the mistakes of our ancestors.
