Dogs are everything that we wish people were. Always positive, loving, compassionate, loyal, brave, silly, willing, and protective. They miss you when you’re gone, and meet you with an active tail when you arrive. No matter how you left the house, or how long that you were gone. They’re just magnificently beautiful friends, and the world is so much better with them in it.
Shogun was my best friend, and deciding to end his life was the hardest thing that I have done. I learned so much from the experience, and I made a promise to him that I will always strive to ameliorate my shortcomings as a pet owner from that point forward. We fought that bitch with everything that we had, him the fighter, and me the coach. Cancer knocked him down in the 12th round, and although he got back to his feet, I was forced to throw in the towel. My life has changed profoundly, and I vow to him that positivity will come from this. I will always remember what “could have been done.” He deserved better, but I can’t dwell on that, or beat myself up about it. I loved him as much as anyone has ever loved an animal. To some people that concept is foreign or crazy, and those people are dickheads that may never know the meaning of life. It is very simple.. To love something with all of your heart. Regardless of what that thing is. If it’s living, it somehow captures your heart, and you fall in love. Then you will know what is really important in this world, and at the culmination of your relationship, you will understand the very simple meaning of life and the prodigious power of love.
